Maoist chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ and UML general secretary Jhala Nath Khanal reached an understanding, during a meeting held at UML’s parliamentary party office Tuesday, to bar Koirala from attending the summit.

The two parties also agreed to table a motion at the CA to this effect on Wednesday. Maoist and UML leaders are learnt to have already started work on the draft of the motion.

The Maoists have also agreed to send President Dr Ram Baran Yadav to the regional summit if they fail to form new government before the summit.

Meanwhile, speaking at the reporters club earlier today, head of CPN (Maoist)’s foreign department, C. P. Gajurel, said his party would not allow Koirala attending the summit at any cost.

Gajurel further said his party would work out on formation of new government within three days and if it is not get materialised, the party would campaign for postponement of the summit. The party has already appealed to the Sri Lanka government through its ambassador to Nepal not to accept Koirala’s participation in the summit.

Speaking on the same programme, Dr Prakash Sharan Mahat of Nepali Congress said the decision has already been taken that PM Koirala would lead Nepali delegation and that it wouldn’t be revised.

He asked Maoist leaders not to expose the national disputes to international forums by trying to obstruct Nepal’s participation in the summit.

Bharat Mohan Adhikari of CPN (UML) said that President Dr Yadav should take part in the summit instead of PM Koirala whose resignation has already been accepted.

Former SAARC secretary general Yadav Kanta Silwal also argued against the idea of PM Koirala taking part in the summit. He said it would be advisable for the President to lead the delegation since no major decision would be taken during this summit.

PM Koirala has intensified consultations with political party leaders a bid to garner support for this participation in the summit.
