Police Intimidation of Adivasi Witnesses, Journalists, Students and Social Workers Ahead of Public Hearing in Dantewada, Chhattisgarh

One day before the Jan Sunwai (public hearing) planned for 6th and 7th Jan to bring out Adivasis’ concerns in Dantewada, Chattisgarh, the police has unleashed a campaign to intimidate and silence key Adivasi witnesses as well as visiting journalists, students and activists.

Even as eminent Gandhian Himanshu Kumar of Vanavasi Chetana Ashram (VCA) broke his fast on the 10th day, the Ashram was surrounded by armed police and Special Police Officers (SPOs).  Journalists Satyen Bordoloi and Priyanka Borpujari from Mumbai, Suresh Deepala, law student and AID volunteer from Hyderabad, and Nishtha, a visiting student from Tata Institute of Social Sciences, were forcibly prevented from leaving, placing them under virtual house arrest for a few hours. They were assaulted and their cameras taken away. After public pressure forced the administration to let them free, they were then detained again at the police station on false charges of assaulting journalists. They have been released now and are back at VCA. Read the rest of this entry »

Chhattisgarh authorities must immediately release witness to extrajudicial executions

AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL, January 5, 2010

Amnesty International urges authorities in the central Indian state of Chhattisgarh to immediately free Sodi Sambo, an adivasi woman and eyewitness to the extrajudicial executions of nine adivasis in Gompad village on 1 October 2009. She is a petitioner in the ongoing case at the Supreme Court seeking an impartial investigation into the killings.

Journalists in the nearby town of Jagdalpur informed Amnesty International that they saw Sodi at a government-run hospital there in the custody of non-uniformed women constables who prevented them from talking to her. Sodi, who had sustained bullet injuries in her leg during the police shootings at Gompad, had been receiving medical treatment at the Vanvasi Chetna Ashram (VCA), a Gandhian organization, at Dantewada. VCA activists told Amnesty International that they feared the Dantewada police were exerting pressure on her to influence her testimony about the extrajudicial executions.

On the afternoon of 3 January, Dantewada police arrested Sodi at Kanker town when she and VCA activist Himanshu Kumar were travelling from Dantewada to Raipur, the state capital. She was then taken to the Kanker and Dantewada police stations where the police said they would record her testimony about the1 October 2009 shootings. Read the rest of this entry »

YCL forms sections, platoons in Udayapur

UDAYAPUR: The Young Communist League (YCL), youth wing of the UCPN (Maoist), is spreading its wings in this eastern district.  YCL district coordinator Jiban Karki aka Kushal said the youth wing had formed sections and platoons in more than 30 VDCs as per the party district committee’s decision of Sept. 5, 2009.

“We have constituted section at the village and platoon at the VDC level,” said Karki. The plan, maintains Karki, is to form a company in each ilaka. Karki informed that the district will have a brigade comprising about 2,000 paramilitary personnel.  Each section and platoon has 11 and 60 paramilitary personnel, respectively, according to the YCL coordinator.

A company was recently formed at Murkuchi Bazaar of Rauta VDC under the command of Prabhat Lama, said Karki. The Maoist youth wing has formed companies in Ilaka numbers 3 and 6 under the coordination of Yoga Khatiwada and Hom Kiranti, respectively. A company consists of more than  300 personnel. “We will accomplish the mission of turning the YCL into a paramilitary force in the district by mid-January. However, we will demonstrate the force on Feb. 13,” informed Karki.

He, however, said the force would not have uniform and weapons. “The force will not stay in the barracks for now. But it will be sheltered in a separate place if time demands,” said Karki.
