Maoists impose indefinite banda over cadre murder
The UCPN (Maoist) has called for an indefinite shutdown of Parsa district [south of Kathmandu] starting Wednesday protesting against the murder of its cadre Rajesh Mandal. Normal life in the bordering town of Birgunj has been affected as transportation has come to a grinding halt, while entire market areas and academic institutions have been shut down following the banda call.
Mandal, a resident of Lalparsa VDC of Parsa district, was gunned down on Tuesday evening by a group of unidentified gunmen at Nitanpur Chowk in Bara district. It has been learnt that an armed Tarai outfit has owned up the responsibility for the killing. However, the Maoists have suspected that its cadres are being targeted because it has launched a movement for national independence and sovereignty.
This is a second fatal attack on the Maoist cadres in the district within seven days. Earlier, three Maoist cadres had been killed and two others injured at Ganjabhawanipur in the district late on Jan. 6 while they were returning home after attending a dinner party. The deceased have been identified as Ambika Mahato, Dara Yadav and Ramprakash Yadav.
